The Year in Review with Brendan Collins

Monday, 17 December 2012    General

2012 has been a big year at Butlers Accountants, a well deserved Christmas break for the team commences on 21 December 2012.

The year has seen a restructuring of the ownership and processes that have so far resulted in an increase in productivity of our staff by 30% plus. Resulting in a business that provides more benefits to both clients and the business owner.

The 2012 goal was and remains "value for money service to our clients". Increased productivity of staff in Accounting is akin to reducing theft in retail.  The end result is lower margins and a more competitive business. I have undertaken extensive research and data analysis this year and Butlers Accountants are on average 25% cheaper for the management of Self Managed Super Funds than other firms. Our quality of work is second to none, and the advice is top notch expert standard.

Secondly, Greater rewards for the staff and owners of Butlers Accountants. We work by the principal "more profit less tax" and the team at Butlers Accountants now understand that higher personal productivity gives this result without increasing the cost to our clients.

So, how did we achieve greats results in 6 months?

1. Understanding the numbers.
2. Having personal budgets.
3. Communicating, Communicating, Communicating.
4. Technology upgrade.
5. Implementing an $80,000 12 month strategy to scan 1.5 million paper documents into a paperless office.
6. Three weekly team meetings and professional development training.
7. Building a team that enjoys coming to work.

The last 6 months has also seen many clients converting to online accounting system, Xero, enabling them to have the peace and mind of Cloud Accounting at the touch of a button on any computer, iPad or smart phone. In my 20 years of installing and using computerised Accounting Software, Xero has transformed the often time consuming function of Accounting in small businesses to a simple click of a button. If you would like to see Xero for yourself, download a free trial version.

Without writing a thesis on the internal workings of an Accounting practice, my message is simple...

Execution is the key, understanding the simple tasks, breaking them down for all staff to see and achieve. Follow up on key points and reward great effort.

I want to thank the staff and clients for their loyalty in 2012 and look forward to implementing and developing more value for service clients in 2013.
